(from the dallasnews.com/sports blog by Damon Sayles):
With a 98-24 cakewalk victory against S&S Consolidated Saturday, the Class 2A defending champion Ponder Lions improved to 21-0 on the season.
For those who love to crunch numbers, that's 47 consecutive victories for the Lions, currently ranked No. 1 in the state among 2A teams. The last team to beat Ponder was Lake Dallas, as the Lions fell on the road, 54-43, on Dec. 11, 2007. Since then, Ponder has been unstoppable.
Last year's state-champion team had only two seniors, meaning head coach Doug Boxell's squad is loaded for another run. Guards Isaiah Boxell, Benji Garza and forwards Scott Gregg, Dylan Ballard and Joel Garza are among the several returners from last season.
Ponder can make it 50 straight wins if it defeats Callisburg on Tuesday, Pilot Point on Friday and Aubrey on Jan. 13.
