Prosper in State Finals 3 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 5
The Prosper football team will play Waco La Vega for the 3A D1 State Championship. The game will be Saturday at 4:00 at Texas Stadium. Denton Guyer will play in the 8:00 game.

We beat Abilene Wylie in the semis in one of the best games I have seen, 39-38 in two overtimes. It was great to be a part of that atmosphere. We were down by 3 late in the game, converted a fourth and long, and kicked a field goal as time expired to send it into overtime. Both teams scored touchdowns in the first overtime, and in the second Abilene had the ball first and scored a touchdown. Our OC had decided before our possession started that if we scored, we would go for two and the win. We scored a touchdown, and for the two point conversion, ran a QB follow off the right edge. He reached out for the end zone, got his legs taken out, and landed barely in the end zone to send us to state.

The QB is a great kid, his mom teaches with me at the middle school, he has good size and decent athletic ability, but above all is a competitor and leader. The winning play is an example of all of those things.

I had looked up the results to this game late Saturday and was wanting to see this report from you. Sounded like a heck of a game.

It was a great game. I'll let Aaron give the recap, but minus 1 big play, Prosper's defense was completely lights out. The offense struggled in the first half but then imposed its will in the second half. Those kids showed a lot of heart because it looked pretty bleak at the beginning of the game.

It was an awesome, awesome experience to be a part of a state title in Texas high school football. I am glad I had the chance to be a part of that atmosphere.

One cool thing, Celina is in our district and only about 10 miles away from Prosper. They are playing for the DII state title in the last high school football game at Texas Stadium on Friday. If Celina wins, we can say we were the best team in any division of 3A as we beat Celina in district play 33-7. I hope they pull it off because it would be a neat story to have that high of a level of football dominating an entire classification from just miles apart.

La Vega had way more team speed than we did, and it showed up when we attempted to pass or an outside run. We got down 10-0 quick, and hit a field goal just before half time to make it 10-3. After halftime, we just pounded them between the tackles again and again and started moving the ball. Our defense was amazing the entire game, giving up one long touchdown that the QB barely got off and their WR was just faster than our CB. Our defense kept us in it and our offense did what it had to do in the second half. La Vega's RB had over 600 yards in his previous three games and we held him under 40. We just hit him every play and held on for dear life. That forced them to spread it out which is not what they are used to, and we had them where we wanted them. It was the best defensive game I have been a part of as a coach.

A couple of things about this team:

- Our kids are tough, gritty, and disciplined. We were not near the most talented team in the state, but we were the best.

- I haven't coached very long, but I have had a little success and had the chance to work with some great coaches. Our DC, Shane Mobley, is the best football coach I have worked with. He knows his stuff as well as any coach in the state and more importantly, those kids would run through a brick wall for him. He always had a great game plan, and he always had the kids executing it at a high level.
