There were many who felt Chris Jones would be a Division I basketball player upon completion of high school basketball. Jones, the talented -- and slightly underrated -- point guard from Garland Lakeview Centennial High School, received his first offer late Thursday morning. Jones said that North Texas offered him a scholarship, and Colorado, New Mexico, Boise State, Oregon State and Houston have expressed recent interest, adding to a growing list of Division I schools, including Texas Tech, TCU, SMU, Wichita State and Missouri State. Jones said he received the news about UNT from Lakeview coach Tony Mauldin. "I found out around third period, which is basketball for us," Jones said. "Coach told me that they were really interested in me. It makes me feel good, especially since it's the first [offer]."
Jones was one of the junior leaders -- guard Toddrick Gotcher being the other -- for a Lakeview team that earned a 33-4 record and advanced to the finals of the UIL Class 5A state tournament before falling to Fort Bend Bush. Jones averaged 13.4 points, 5.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds. Jones recently found out that most of his contributions were done with a semi-major injury. Jones played the season with pain in his right wrist, and after the season, he found out his wrist was broken. Jones was put in a cast two weeks ago and is expected to have the cast removed in two more weeks.
When Jones returns, he will return to AAU play with the LBA Seawolves, who also includes Gotcher, Garland High School's Emmanuel Okoroba and Duncanville High School's James Moody. The Seawolves are scheduled to play in this weekend's Great American Shoot-Out in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Jones, in addition, will come back with the intention of attracting even more colleges -- even though he's quite proud of his first offer.
"A lot of coaches have been calling lately," he said. "They want someone who can score and distribute the ball. I'm just ready to get back out there and play again."
