TOPIC: Jones leaving?

Everyone remembers the allegations against Dale Brown and Johnny Jones by former LSU player Lester Earl, but the confession of telling lies and the apology by Lester Earl received about 2 cents worth of pub.
The apology

Since Auburn's last head coach came from jobs at Tennessee Tech and Tennessee-Chatanooga I think it would be a big surprise for them to hire another coach with a mid-major background. The fans want a big name coach and Auburn can afford to pay whatever it takes.

I don't see JJ getting the Auburn job or any high profile school at this time. It is nice to have a coach that is at least getting a glance at that level. It is sad, that in the forty plus years I have been following NT BB, not one coach has ever been lost due to success at NT.

Vito seems to think JJ is in a great position to land the job.

My big hope is that Vito's source close to the situation is the Dothan Eagle writer (Drew something?) who covers Troy and probably has a lot of Auburn contacts.

Maybe that guy and whoever his Auburn sources are have misread the situation or only know part of the story.

I really, really don't want to lose him now. If we lose him before he signs anyone in April and/or November... And Gillespie is hired by Houston... I don't know if there's an obvious answer out there who can give us a quick home run.

There are good candidates, but the April and November signees and next year's potential success could be the foundation for a huge, huge step up. If we're dealing with transition and the risk that comes with it at this critical, make or break (again) juncture in our basketball program... I just worry where we might end up.

If we lose JJ, I actually would wanna take one of his assistants(Foy?) to keep the stability of the program.

I'd love the promote-from-within hire, because that seems to be the key to long term sustained growth and success in non-Power 7 conference schools.

But it seems like Forrest is the main recruiting guy on the assistant staff, and I don't know if he'd stick around as an assistant here.

We need a bench coach who knows this team to get the most out of them next season, and we need a guy who has already done a lot of recruiting work to address our needs next year.

Scott Cross would be my second choice behind Gillispie, assuming we went with an outside hire.

If we promote from within, I think the only way I'd really feel confident about it is if we had Foy AND Forrest locked in for sure. If we couldn't keep them both, I'd be anxious about whether promoting from within is really the best move.

That's no disrespect to Coach Leonard, either. Ideally, they'd all stick around and JJ would hire a whole new staff at Auburn. But given that Leonard has already followed JJ through a couple of stops, I would expect him to be a part of JJ's Auburn staff, too.
